U.S. sets record for number of deportations in 2011

"The Department of Homeland Security deported 400,000 undocumented immigrants in the fiscal year which ended last month, making this the tenth year in a row in which the U.S. carried out a record number of deportations. However, despite this continued trend, the number of individuals deported from Arizona actually dropped this year from 92,600 in 2010 to 52,000 in 2011. This is the first time in four years that Arizona has not led the nation in deportations."

"When Colorado resident Sujey Pando became perhaps the first in the nation to receive a reprieve from her imminent deportation, only days after President Obama announced that the Department of Homeland Security would temporarily halt deportation proceedings against 300,000 non-criminal immigrants, it seemed a good sign to the many undocumented immigrants in the U.S. Now, several weeks after the policy shift, the news continues to be good for many, although others seem to be falling victim to the confusing ambivalence of Obama’s announcement."
